Calvary Temple in Hyderabad, India is one of the most amazing examples of church growth and a modern-day example of God’s power in action. Pastor P. Satish Kumar was a somewhat reluctant founder. But one day he heard God say that He would give him a very large church. The church was founded by 25 people in 2005. Satish Kumar had no training in preaching, so he has imitated Jesus’ preaching style, where he preaches the word of God with illustrations and parables.
In 2012, the congregation began a 40-day prayer and fasting period on the land they owned. Pastor Satish Kumar taught from the book of Nehemiah and they concluded that Nehemiah probably spent 4 months in prayer before he began building the walls of Jerusalem. So they continued to pray and fast for two more periods of 40 days each. In the fall of 2012, Satish Kumar heard God say that if he believed like Nehemiah did, history would repeat itself and he would build a large church building and do it in 52 days. He declared it in faith to the congregation. They laid the cornerstone on November 11, 2012 and 52 days later, on January 1, 2013, the new church was dedicated.
Through regular prayer and fasting periods, a fantastic work in the congregation and strong media work, the growth has only continued.
An interesting example: They send birthday cakes to everyone in the congregation who has a birthday. They believe that Calvary Temple is dedicated to spreading the love of Jesus. So that’s one of the things they do. For many poor Indians, the birthday cake has been a great encouragement.
Calvary Temple is located in an environment that has at times meant persecution. But through the fantastic work the congregation does, it is much like in the Acts of the Apostles that the people hold them in high regard. When they opened a Covid-Center with 300 beds and free care, this was written about in several Indian newspapers. They have also given away 800 tons of food during the pandemic and reached about 40,000 homes with help.
